It spends its day picking at film and filamentous algae on rock and sifting the top of the sand for copepodsA tiny crustacean that lives in the rock and sand; natural live food for many fish. and other small sand fauna, which is exactly where the difficulty lies: it grazes continuously on live micro-food and many wild specimens never switch to prepared foods. Put it only in a mature tank with plenty of live rock, an established pod population and no fast-feeding competitors, and expect to supplement with live or frozen pods and finely chopped mysis. Captive-bred stock is now available and takes prepared food far more reliably than wild fish. It is peaceful and completely safe with corals, but is territorial toward its own kind, so keep one per tank unless the tank is large.
