Do You Need a Protein Skimmer? Sizing, Placement and When to Skip One

Plenty of lightly-stocked nano tanks run fine on water changes alone. Here's how to tell if yours is one of them, and how to size and place the skimmer if it isn't.

A protein skimmer is the piece of equipment most reef keepers buy twice — once too early, sized off a chart on the box, and once again after they understand what the number on that chart actually means. This guide covers both: whether your tank needs one at all, and if it does, how to size and place it correctly the first time.

What a skimmer actually does

Fish waste, uneaten food and dying tissue dissolve into the water as organic compounds. Left alone, bacteria break those compounds down into ammonia, then nitrite, then nitrate — the nitrogen cycle every reef tank runs on. A skimmer intercepts a chunk of that waste before the bacteria get to it: rising bubbles in a reaction chamber drag dissolved organics to the surface as foam, and the foam collects in a cup you empty and rinse.

It doesn't replace the nitrogen cycle — nitrate still forms from whatever the skimmer misses — but it pulls out waste at the source, which means less nitrate to begin with and less algae feeding on what's left. That's the whole mechanism. Everything below is about whether your tank needs that mechanism running continuously, or whether water changes already do the job.

Do you need one

Not always, and this is the question worth answering honestly before buying anything. A lightly-stocked all-in-one under roughly 60 L with two or three small fish and modest feeding is the usual case where a skimmer earns little — regular water changes remove the organic load about as fast as it accumulates, and running a skimmer on that little bioload just means an empty cup and a faint hum for no measurable gain.

The signal that tips a tank into needing one is rising nitrate you can't explain, or a water-change schedule that's crept up to weekly just to keep nitrate in range. If you're already doing that work by hand, a skimmer is offering to do it continuously instead. Heavier stocking, heavier feeding, and corals that resent nitrate — most SPS, some LPS — all pull a tank toward needing one sooner rather than later.

There's no shame in adding one later. A skimmer is one of the few pieces of gear that bolts on after the fact without touching anything else in the build, so "not yet" is a legitimate answer at setup, not a mistake waiting to surface.

Sizing: the rated-volume lie

Every skimmer ships with a rated-volume range on the box — "rated for 40–80 gallons," something like that. The trap is that the two ends of that range assume opposite stocking levels: the low number assumes a heavily-stocked reef, the high number assumes a fish-only tank with light feeding. Buy to the flattering high number on a normally-stocked reef and the skimmer runs undersized from day one.

ReefPicker sizes against the midpoint of the manufacturer's range instead of the maximum, and the band it checks against is a multiple of your actual system volume: 1.53× your system volume is the ideal window. Below 1× the margin is thin. Below 0.75×it's flagged as genuinely undersized — though a hair under that line is a soft warning, not the same conflict as a skimmer at half the size a tank needs.

"System volume" means the tank's own display (net) volume — the number sump-connected filtration doesn't change, and the same anchor every other sizing rule on ReefPicker uses, not a published gross-volume figure that can include the sump.

Can a skimmer be too big

Rarely in a way that hurts the tank. An oversized skimmer on a lightly-stocked system runs "wet" — thin, watery foam that pulls little of real value — but that's a soft inefficiency, not a conflict. It isn't stripping trace elements the tank needs or otherwise doing harm; it's just bigger than the job requires.

The harder ceiling is physical, not biological. In a sump, the skimmer has to sit within its rated operating-depth range and still come out cleanly for servicing — a body sized for a much bigger tank often just doesn't fit the sump section it's meant for. In an all-in-one, the constraint is the rear chamber: height, footprint and operating depth all have to clear the space behind the display glass, which is usually the tighter limit long before rated volume becomes an issue. In-sump, hang-on-back, or AIO chamber

Skimmers install in one of a few places, and the choice usually isn't a preference — it's dictated by what kind of tank you're running.

In-sump is the default once you have a sump: quieter, out of sight, no bracket hanging off the display rim, and easy to pull for cleaning without disturbing the tank. Compact in-sump units like the Bubble Magus Curve series or the Tunze Comline DOC cover small-to-mid systems; step up to a Deltec, Royal Exclusiv Bubble King or Nyos Quantum for a larger reef that needs serious rated capacity.

Hang-on-backsuits an all-in-one or a tank without a sump — the unit clips to the rim and skims directly from the display, at the cost of a visible bracket and a little more noise. It's the right call when there's nowhere else for a skimmer to go.

AIO rear chamberis a third path some compact skimmers are purpose-built for — small enough in footprint and height to drop straight into an all-in-one's filtration compartment, no hang-on bracket needed. Check the chamber's published dimensions against the skimmer's footprint and operating depth before buying; a skimmer can be listed as "AIO-compatible" in general and still not fit a specific tank's chamber.

A practical shopping list

Rough starting points by placement, ordered from compact to serious capacity:

  • In-sump, small-to-mid tanks. Bubble Magus Curve 5/7/9 and the Tunze Comline DOC are the common compact picks — quiet, easy to service, sized for nano through mid-size reefs.
  • In-sump, larger reefs. Deltec, Royal Exclusiv Bubble King and Nyos Quantum cover the step up in rated volume once a tank outgrows the compact units — the ones that also stretch the rated-volume ceiling legitimately, per their own published specs.
  • Hang-on-back. AquaMaxx's HOB line is the common choice for an all-in-one or sump-less tank without a rear filtration chamber built in.
