Aquarium Controllers: Apex vs GHL vs Mastertronic vs a Single-Parameter Unit

"Controller" covers everything from a $40 thermostat box to a full reef-monitoring system with its own power bars and probes. Here's how to tell which one your tank actually needs.

"Do I need a controller?" is really three separate questions wearing one name. A basic Inkbird thermostat, a full Neptune Apex system and a GHL power bar all sit in the same product category, and they solve different problems at different prices. This guide sorts out which is which before you buy the wrong one.

The category mixes six products

"Aquarium controller" is really an umbrella over six distinct kinds of device, and knowing which is which is most of the buying decision:

  • Head unit — the brain of a full system: Neptune Apex, GHL ProfiLux, Hydros Control. Monitors multiple parameters, switches outlets, runs on its own or with add-on modules.
  • Single-parameter controller — an Inkbird thermostat or a Milwaukee pH controller. Genuinely between a head unit and a dumb power strip: it reads one thing and switches power based on it, no app ecosystem required.
  • Power bar — a smart outlet strip. Some stand alone with their own app (Reef Factory's Power Switcher); others require a head unit to mean anything (a GHL power bar with no ProfiLux is an expensive extension cord).
  • Automated tester — runs a wet-chemistry test on a schedule and logs or reports the result, instead of you doing it by hand.
  • Module / accessory — a probe, expansion board or add-on that plugs into a head unit and does nothing on its own.
  • Monitor — measures and reports, switches nothing. The lightest-weight option when all you want is a number and an alert.

A listing that doesn't say which of these six it is tends to sink to the bottom of comparison lists for a real reason: buyers can't tell what they're looking at. Check the role before the price.

Do you need a head unit at all

Not every tank does. If the only thing you need automated is temperature — the single most common use case — a single-parameter unit like the Inkbird ITC-308 does the whole job for around $40, with no app, no ecosystem, and nothing else to configure. A full head unit earns its price once you want more than one thing watched — temperature, pH, ATO water level and leak detection through one dashboard, with push alerts when any of them drifts — or once you want to automate actions across the tank rather than react to one number in isolation. If you're listing more than two things you'd like monitored, a head unit usually costs less than the pile of single-parameter boxes that would otherwise cover the same ground.

Head units: Apex vs GHL vs Hydros

The three head-unit ecosystems that come up most in the hobby, in the order most reefers meet them:

Neptune Apex is the default recommendation and the largest installed base — Classic, EL, A3 and A3 Jr/Pro cover everything from a first system to a full reef room, with the widest range of add-on modules (DOS dosing, FMM leak/level detection, EnergyBar power bars, WAV wave pumps).

GHL ProfiLux (4.1e / mini WiFi and up) is the other major ecosystem, popular for its dosing precision and its own line of compatible power bars and ion probes — a genuine alternative rather than a budget option.

Hydros Control is the newer, more approachable entry into the same tier — a simpler app and setup flow, at the cost of a smaller module catalog than Apex or GHL today.

None of the three is a wrong answer for a typical reef; the real decision is the ecosystem lock-in below, not which brand monitors temperature more accurately.

Ecosystems and the lock-in

This is the part that actually decides your next several purchases. A head unit's add-ons — power bars, probes, dosing modules — almost always work with thathead unit's ecosystem only. Buy a GHL power bar without a ProfiLux already running, and you've bought an expensive strip that does nothing on its own; it needs the head unit to mean anything.

None of these ecosystems talk to each other. Picking a head unit early is effectively picking which brand's power bars, probes and dosers you'll be shopping from for the life of the tank — worth deciding deliberately, not backing into after a power bar is already in the cart.

Power bars — the wattage that matters

A smart power bar has its own hard ceiling: total combined wattage it can switch across all outlets. It's a region-specific number — a US bar runs 120 V and an EU bar runs 230 V, so the same amp rating yields a very different wattage ceiling depending on where the bar is sold. Add up everything you plan to plug into one bar — return pump, heaters, powerheads, dosing pumps — before assuming it fits; a bar rated for a modest amp draw can be closer to its limit than the outlet count alone suggests.

A practical shopping list

  • GHL ecosystem. ProfiLux 4.1e or Mini WiFi as the head unit, GHL's own power bars and ion probes once that's in place.
  • Automated testing without a full head unit. Focustronic Alkatronic or Mastertronic pair with the standalone Powertronic power bar — the one ecosystem here that doesn't require a head unit to start.
