Skunk Cleaner Shrimp

Lysmata amboinensis

The most widely kept ornamental cleaning shrimp, native to Red Sea and Indo-Pacific reefs. It sets up a fixed cleaning station and services fish for parasites and dead tissue, sometimes entering the mouths of client fish. It is a protandric hermaphrodite best kept as a single bonded pair — more than two unrelated individuals will fight to the death. Despite its cleaning role it is still preyed on by hawkfish and lionfish.
