Zebra Moray

Gymnomuraena zebra

Banded black and white from snout to tail, the zebra moray is the gentlest of the commonly kept eels and the one most often described as safe with fish. That reputation is earned rather than marketing: its jaws carry flat, pavement-like crushing plates for hard-shelled prey — crabs, shrimp, molluscs, urchins — and no source records it hunting fish, though small ones are rarely taken rather than never. Crustaceans are another matter entirely, and a cleanup crew will simply disappear. It is not venomous, but it is enormous: 120 cm is a realistic adult over a lifespan that can pass twenty years, and the tank has to be long enough for it to stretch out.
