Panther Grouper

Cromileptes altivelis

The Panther Grouper — also called the Humpback Grouper — is unmistakable: pale grey-white skin peppered with round black spots and a distinctive sloped forehead. It is a voracious ambush predator that swallows whole anything that fits in its mouth, and it grows into a genuinely enormous fish that needs a 300-gallon-plus tank of its own — small fish, shrimp and other invertebrates are food, not tankmates. This is a decade-plus commitment to a large, heavily-fed predator system, not a reef community fish.
