Golden Dwarf Moray

Gymnothorax melatremus

A butter-yellow eel barely longer than a pencil, the golden dwarf is the smallest moray in the trade and the only one that fits a normal reef tank. Note the genus: unlike the crushing Echidna morays it belongs to Gymnothorax, with sharp gripping teeth and a genuine appetite for fish, so tankmates have to be too big to swallow rather than merely peaceful. Ornamental shrimp and small crabs are food either way. It is uncommon and expensive, always wild-caught, and being small it slips through smaller gaps than its larger relatives — a sealed lid is not optional.
