Squirrelfish
Crown Squirrelfish
Sargocentron diadema
A nocturnal, cave-dwelling squirrelfish in bright red crossed by thin white lines, sheltering under ledges by day and roaming the open sand and low reef for crustaceans after dark. It is hardy and peaceful toward fish and leaves coral alone, but it eats crustaceans — small ornamental shrimp are at risk — and carries a venomous preopercular spine, so handle it with care. Does best in a small group with plenty of hiding places.
Best in a group of 2+.
