Fighting Conch

Strombus alatus

The Florida Fighting Conch (Strombus alatus) is an obligate sand-sifter that plows the substrate for detritus, film algae, cyanobacteria and leftover food, rarely visible above the sand. It needs an established sand bed to survive — a bare-bottom or shallow crushed-coral tank will starve it within months. Buyers should know juvenile queen conch (which grow far larger) are sometimes mixed into "fighting conch" listings, and that males can fight each other, so give a single specimen ~20–30 gallons of footprint.
