Klein's Butterflyfish

Chaetodon kleinii

Klein's butterflyfish is widely regarded as the most forgiving butterflyfish for beginners — hardy, an eager eater of frozen mysis and prepared foods from day one, and tolerant of a broad range of tankmates. It isn't a true reef-safe fish: in the wild it grazes soft coral polyps (particularly Sarcophyton leathers) alongside algae and zooplankton, and captive fish will sometimes nip at soft corals or zoanthids, so treat it as reef-caution rather than reef-safe wherever softies are kept. At a modest adult size and with a genuinely peaceful temperament, it's a solid first butterflyfish for a FOWLR or a coral-light reef.
