Rainford's Goby

Koumansetta rainfordi

Also sold as Old Glory or Court Jester Goby — a small, dark-bodied goby striped lengthwise in orange and yellow with a black ocellus on the dorsal fin, formerly placed in Amblygobius. It spends its day picking at film and filamentous algae on rock and sifting the top of the sand for copepods and other small sand fauna, which is exactly where the difficulty lies: it grazes continuously on live micro-food and many wild specimens never switch to prepared foods. Put it only in a mature tank with plenty of live rock, an established pod population and no fast-feeding competitors, and expect to supplement with live or frozen pods and finely chopped mysis. Captive-bred stock is now available and takes prepared food far more reliably than wild fish. It is peaceful and completely safe with corals, but is territorial toward its own kind, so keep one per tank unless the tank is large.

Tankmates

How Rainford's Goby gets on with the rest of the reef, checked pair by pair by the same engine as the live pre-flight.

Best kept apart

A real clash — aggression, predation or a same-genus fight.

Maroon ClownfishMaroon Clownfish (aggressive) is much larger than the peaceful Rainford's Goby and may harass it.Purple TangPurple Tang (aggressive) is much larger than the peaceful Rainford's Goby and may harass it.Coral HawkfishHawkfish perch on the rock and pick at small bottom-dwellers; care guides name them alongside dottybacks as the fish that pester docile gobies like Rainford's.Spotted MandarinRainford's goby grazes the same live-rock and sand-bed pods the mandarin depends on, and it feeds far faster. Neither fish is aggressive, but the mandarin is the slow, methodical hunter and is the one that tends to waste away.Antennata LionfishAntennata Lionfish has a big enough mouth to eat the much smaller Rainford's Goby.Picasso TriggerfishPicasso Triggerfish (aggressive) is much larger than the peaceful Rainford's Goby and may harass it.Twinspot GobyBoth live off the same sand-bed and rock microfauna, and both are already borderline feeders in captivity. Reef Builders explicitly recommends the twinspot only gets tankmates that are not competing for the same foods.Royal DottybackDottybacks are named as a species to keep away from small, docile gobies, and Rainford's goby is both timid and a slow grazer that cannot afford to be driven off its feeding patch.Domino DamselDomino Damsel (aggressive) is much larger than the peaceful Rainford's Goby and may harass it.Marine BettaMarine Betta has a big enough mouth to eat the much smaller Rainford's Goby.Dragon WrasseDragon Wrasse has a big enough mouth to eat the much smaller Rainford's Goby.Volitans LionfishVolitans Lionfish has a big enough mouth to eat the much smaller Rainford's Goby.Zebra Dwarf LionfishZebra Dwarf Lionfish has a big enough mouth to eat the much smaller Rainford's Goby.Snowflake MoraySnowflake Moray has a big enough mouth to eat the much smaller Rainford's Goby.Zebra MorayZebra Moray has a big enough mouth to eat the much smaller Rainford's Goby.Chainlink MorayChainlink Moray has a big enough mouth to eat the much smaller Rainford's Goby.Golden Dwarf MorayGolden Dwarf Moray has a big enough mouth to eat the much smaller Rainford's Goby.Rectangle TriggerfishRectangle Triggerfish (aggressive) is much larger than the peaceful Rainford's Goby and may harass it.Clown TriggerfishClown Triggerfish (aggressive) is much larger than the peaceful Rainford's Goby and may harass it.Miniata GrouperMiniata Grouper (aggressive) is much larger than the peaceful Rainford's Goby and may harass it.
