Swissguard Basslet

Liopropoma rubre

A small Caribbean cave dweller marked with horizontal peach and maroon stripes and black-and-white blotches on the dorsal and tail fins. It lives in and around a chosen crevice rather than in open water, so it is cryptic for the first weeks and only becomes reliably visible once it has claimed a cave and learned the feeding routine. Care is straightforward — it takes meaty frozen foods readily — but it is a crevice predator, so very small ornamental shrimp and any fish that fits in its mouth are at risk. Keep only one per tank; it will not tolerate another Liopropoma or a similar basslet. Reef safe with corals, and a good choice for a rock-heavy tank that needs a fish with some presence but no bulk.
